The Mission has never felt more Impossible!
If you should choose to accept this mission to read this review of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning just know that after you have finished reading this review will self destruct in five seconds. Tom Cruise is back yet again with another film in the franchise but this time around it’s all added up to this final mission. Christopher McQuarrie continues to helm this franchise as the director since the 4th film which comes with the exception of big and thrilling stunts that only Tom Cruise can accomplish.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team continue to race against the clock to stop the Entity from causing the end of all mankind. Along the way he must navigate against other nations who are also racing to gain control of the Entity and the power its processes. Faced with tasks that should be impossible Ethan and his team find the narrow margins of success that might just be enough to save all mankind.
New and big name actors always find their way into this franchise with each movie and this one is no exception adding the likes of Nick Offerman, Angela Bassett, Tramell Tillman, Hannah Waddingham, and Katy O’Brian to name a few. Each actor gets limited screen time in this two hour and 50 minute film but with that they all make the most of their time and characters by adding pivotal moments to the overall story. As for Cruise and his IMF team the whole cast is back minus Rebecca Ferguson for obvious reasons. Simon Pegg continues to shine as the comedic relief with newly added team member Pom Klementieff stealing the show with her fun and violent character of Paris.
Visually this film is a step up from the previous as the cinematography continues to shine with all the action scenes and set pieces. Seeing Tom hanging on the wing of biplane combined with a score completely cut out as we hear him gasping for air only adds to the tension of the scene specially when you know Tom does all his own stunts practically. With that the score continues to be iconic as ever playing throughout the film with slight changes in pitch and tone.
As for the cons of the film the story does go through some reckoning to help fill in any holes in the plot that were laid from the previous films to make for a coherent narrative. In order to achieve this the film does utilize flashback montages throughout in order to remind viewers of events that have happened in previous films. For most general going audiences they will enjoy this aspect but for the hardcore fans they might it to be a bit repetitive
Overall Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning wraps up the eight film story in a way that will satisfy a majority of fans. Tom Cruise continues to deliver with his thrilling and intense stunts, with the entire underwater scene being one of the best in the franchise. While it does have its problems with a weak script that does a lot of over explaining/catching audiences up I can still recommend seeing this in the biggest screen possible.
